It's official: UNESCO has just given the Beaujolais Geopark a green card, which means that the label will be renewed for a further 4 years.
This decision follows the assessment mission carried out in October 2021 by the two evaluators appointed by UNESCO, Antonio Duarte (Arouca Geopark, Portugal) and Antonio Garcia Jimenez (Sierras Subbéticas Geopark, Spain). On this occasion, they had a few days to examine the actions carried out in the field by the Beaujolais Geopark, in collaboration with its network of partners. Their report was studied by the UNESCO World Geoparks Bureau in December, which decided to propose renewal of the label for the Beaujolais.
The Beaujolais Geopark is also expanding, as the application to extend its territory has been accepted! Three new communes are joining the Geopark adventure: L'Arbresle, Bully and Sarcey. The area now comprises 121 municipalities, all committed to preserving and promoting local heritage through a sustainable development approach.
This renewal is accompanied by a number of recommendations, which will form part of the objectives to be achieved by the next audit, scheduled for 2025. The Beaujolais Geopark has already turned its attention to preparing the future action plan, which will define the roadmap for the coming years.
